He uncovered that mystery IC by the Lightning connector, marked 338S00140 A0SM1624 TW-which doesn’t tell us much, other than it’s an Apple part number. But what’s all that silicon around the Lightning connector end? Most of the retail space near the connector is taken up by a single mystery IC. As expected, one end is a simple female 3.5 mm headphone jack, and the other end is a male Lightning connector. There’s actually a lot going on in there. So, you’d probably think a $9 dongle doesn’t have much going on. Separately, this little adapter retails for $9.00-making it pretty much the cheapest thing in the Apple store, where you can drop $35 for a simple screen protector. But we’re not all prepared to shell out for new headphones just yet, so to ease the transition Apple gave iPhone 7 owners a deal worthy of Oprah- you get a headphone adapter! And you get a headphone adapter! Everyone gets a headphone adapter! All Your Digitals Are Belong To UsĪpple feels the 3.5 mm audio jack is an antique whose time has passed. Instead we’re asking, How did they do it? And since we like taking things apart, we’ll answer with some exploratory surgery and some X-rays. Why did they do it? Was it worth it? Will other manufacturers copy it? Today we’re going to ignore all of these questions. So, for now, the 35W charger should suffice for most Apple gadgets, including the entry-level MacBook Air.The decision to axe the iPhone’s built-in headphone port and simply put an adapter in the box has provoked reactions ranging from amusement to near panic.
A dual port 67W or 96W charger would be better for the consumers, but sadly Apple isn’t onboard. It’s only so because the dual port brick can charge two devices at the same time. The mess of Apple chargersĪll said and done, we’ve established that the 35W dual USB-C adapter is the most value-for-money Apple charger. It may take longer than usual to charge two devices simultaneously, but charging a watch or AirPods along with an iPhone should be no trouble.

For example, if a MacBook and an iPhone are charged at the same time, neither would charge at full speed. The only drawback to the 35W adapter is that it divides power when both ports are in use. Meanwhile, the dual USB-C charger trumps its more powerful cousin by charging two devices through its dual ports. So users can only charge one device at a time. However, all higher-wattage Apple chargers come with a single USB-C port.

New MacBooks ship with the same charging brick, which is a good thing, as users won’t have to carry more than one adapter if they pack this one.Īpple also has a more expensive 96W and 140W charging bricks, which are especially useful for 16-inch MacBook Pro owners. MacBook Pro users can charge their devices with a 67W charger. And more powerful chargers are also bulkier and less travel-friendly. For buyers who want a higher-wattage charger, the deal gets sweeter if you add more money.
